FAMILY LEARNING & ENGAGEMENT
The Home-School Thread
Bring home and school into the same conversation.
Families bring deep knowledge of their children. Educators bring knowledge of teaching and learning. The Home–School Thread brings those perspectives together through welcoming, practical workshops that schools host for parents and caregivers.
A SHARED UNDERSTANDING
Start with what families want to understand.
Offer one workshop or a connected series. Each session makes room for questions, conversation, and practical ideas families can adapt to their children, languages, and daily routines.
-
Understand the learning behind everyday experiences.
Explore attention, memory, practice, and why learning takes time. Consider ways to help children remember, talk through ideas, and work through moments when learning feels difficult.
Questions we can explore together:
Why can a child understand something today and forget it tomorrow?
What kinds of practice can families use at home?
How can we respond when a child gets stuck?
-
Connect classroom words with the conversations of everyday life.
Explore ways to notice, explain, and revisit words through conversation, shared reading, play, and familiar activities. Draw on the language and experiences families already share to help children make new connections.
Questions we can explore together
How can we explain a new word in a way a child understands?
Where can we find opportunities to use school vocabulary at home?
How can we keep a word in conversation after the first introduction?
-
Make everyday tasks more manageable, together.
Learn about the skills involved in starting tasks, remembering steps, organizing materials, and managing time. Explore routines, prompts, and ways to practice that fit a child’s current needs and support growing independence.
Questions we can explore together
What might make it hard for a child to get started or follow through?
How can we make routines and directions easier to use?
When should we offer help, and when might a child be ready for less support?
Built with Families in Mind
Families bring experience, insight, and questions worth listening to. Workshops combine clear explanations and everyday examples with time for conversation and reflection.
The focus is on manageable possibilities: a conversation during a meal, a word noticed in a book, or a routine that helps a child get ready. Families choose what fits their lives.
FOR SCHOOL & DISTRICT LEADERS
Make the connection intentional.
Start with your community’s questions and your school’s priorities. Build family learning into the work you are already doing.
Choose a focus.
Select a workshop or series that responds to what families want to understand.
Connect the learning.
Pair family sessions with educator learning where a shared topic would be useful.
Make room for dialogue.
Invite families’ perspectives and consider how their questions can inform the school’s next steps.
What could your school and families explore together?
Let’s plan a family workshop or series that connects your school’s priorities with the questions, strengths, and everyday experiences of your community.
