PROFESSIONAL LEARNING FOR EDUCATORS
The Teaching Thread
Connect how learning happens with how you teach.
Strong instruction connects the decisions teachers make each day: what to teach, how to explain it, when to offer support, and how to know what students understand. CGT Learning Throughline helps educators bring those decisions together around a shared understanding of learning.
A COHERENT APPROACH TO INSTRUCTION
Find your starting point.
Choose a focused workshop or connect topics in a learning series. Each offering links the ideas behind a practice with examples, opportunities to try it, and application to your curriculum.
-
Make learning science useful in everyday teaching.
Explore what learning is, how cognition and memory work, and the roles of working memory and long-term memory. Connect these ideas to the way you explain new content, sequence tasks, and plan practice and review.
-
Make thinking visible. Guide practice. Respond to understanding.
Connect clear explanations, modeling, guided practice, and independent application. Examine how to adjust support and use evidence of student learning to decide what comes next.
Examples of Focus Sessions:
Modeling & co-construction: Demonstrate the thinking behind a task and build examples with students.
“I do, we do, you do”: Plan the movement toward independence using evidence of student readiness.
Scaffolding & differentiation: Adjust support while maintaining meaningful learning goals.
Retrieval & interleaving: Plan opportunities to recall learning and practice choosing among previously taught approaches.
Formative assessment & feedback: Interpret student responses and use them to guide feedback and instruction.
-
Connect knowing a word with using it.
Select important words and teach them through pronunciation, student-friendly meanings, word origins and parts, and varied examples. Plan repeated opportunities to use vocabulary in speaking, reading, and writing.
-
Connect the reader, the text, and the knowledge needed to understand it.
Examine the knowledge, vocabulary, language, and reasoning a text demands. Plan modeling, questions, discussion, and writing that help students make meaning and make their understanding visible.
-
Put reading, writing, and discussion to work in every subject.
Explore how students read, write, and communicate in science, history, mathematics, and other disciplines. Develop routines that serve the learning goals and ways of thinking specific to your subject.
-
Connect the demands of a task with the support students need.
Explore the skills involved in getting started, holding directions in mind, organizing work, and monitoring progress. Design routines and prompts that make classroom tasks more manageable and support growing independence.
From Understanding to Everyday Practice
Professional learning should give teachers something they can use and a clear understanding of why and when to use it.
Sessions connect explanation and demonstration with practice, feedback, and planning. In a series, educators return to their application, examine what happened, and refine their next steps.
CARRY THE CONNECTION HOME
One Learning Community.
Connected Conversations.
Pair educator learning with a family workshop on how children learn, vocabulary, or executive function. The Home–School Thread gives schools a way to connect classroom priorities with families’ knowledge of their children and everyday life at home.
What is your school working toward?
Let’s shape a workshop or connected series around your educators, your curriculum, and the instructional questions that matter to your school.
